No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
