Seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
