Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise significant questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of files that included little previously unseen data.
